CITY TOUR – CHIDIYATAPU
After Breakfast visit following places:
Cellular Jail: The Cellular Jail, also known as Kaala Paani, is a historic monument located in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was built by the British in 1906 and used as a colonial prison for Indian freedom fighters during the struggle for independence. The jail was designed to keep prisoners isolated and cut off from the outside world. The three-story structure has seven wings, each with three stories, and was designed to hold up to 693 prisoners. The prisoners were kept in solitary confinement in small, windowless cells, which were known as “cells” or “cages.” The conditions inside the jail were extremely harsh, and prisoners were subjected to inhumane treatment and torture. The Cellular Jail is now a national memorial and serves as a reminder of India’s struggle for freedom.
Samudrika Marine Museum: The Samudrika Marine Museum in Port Blair is a must-visit attraction for marine life enthusiasts. The museum houses an impressive collection of over 350 varieties of marine life, including clownfish, clam shells (whose sale is banned), a variety of corals, and a complete skeleton of a blue whale. The museum offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the marine biodiversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and its conservation efforts. The museum is open every day, except Mondays and national holidays, from 9 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm. With its informative exhibits and impressive collection, the Samudrika Marine Museum is a great place to learn and appreciate the diverse marine life of the region.
Anthropological Museum: The Anthropological Museum is a must-visit for those interested in the cultural and social history of Andaman and Nicobar. It showcases the lifestyle, traditions, and artifacts of the indigenous tribes, including the Jarawas, Shompens, Onges, Nicobarese, and Sentinelese. The museum features sculptures, murals, photographs, and other exhibits that provide insights into the lives of these tribes. The museum is open from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Anyone interested in art and history should include this museum on their Port Blair sightseeing list.
Chatham saw mill (forest museum): The Chatham Saw Mill is Asia’s oldest sawmill located on a small island and connected to Port Blair by a bridge. The mill is accompanied by a forest department museum that showcases the region’s forest activities through scale models and displays of decorative pieces made from various woods such as Padauk, Marble, Peauma, Gurjan, and Satin Wood. The museum is a must-visit for those interested in forestry and the history of the region’s lumber industry.
Jogger’s Park: Jogger’s Park is a popular destination in Port Blair known for its cleanliness, beautiful views, and unique feature of providing a clear view of the nearby airport runway. The park is situated on a hill, offering visitors the chance to connect with nature and enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the ocean, Ross Island, and North Bay Island.
The park is a great spot for joggers, walkers, and those who enjoy outdoor activities. It’s also an excellent location for plane enthusiasts, as the clear view of the airport runway provides a rare opportunity to see planes taking off and landing up close.
Flag Point: Flag Point in Port Blair holds great historical significance as it is the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian Tricolour on Indian soil for the first time on 30th December 1943. This event took place during the occupation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the Japanese imperial forces in World War II. Netaji was accompanied by officials of Azad Hind Fauj and the provisional government of Azad Hind during the hoisting of the flag. The Japanese had declared that the islands would be transferred to the provisional Government, Azad Hind, and Netaji, as the Supreme Commander of Azad Hind Fauj and head of the state of the provisional government, took the opportunity to assert India’s independence. Today, a 150-feet high flag mast stands at the same spot where Netaji unfurled the Tricolor, and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 75th anniversary of this historic event.
Chidiyatapu (Sunset View Point): After your meal, get ready to explore Chidiyatapu, a pristine beach located 40 km away from the city center. This beach is known for its incredible sunset views, and you will have the opportunity to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Relax on the pure white sands and listen to the humming of birds while watching the gentle blue waves. The lush green mangroves and sandy beaches of Chidiyatapu invite you for a day of recreation. The variety of birds, including the emerald dove, red-breasted parakeets, and drongos, make it a photographer’s delight. Watch the sunset from the forest guest house, with the orange sun reflecting off the many isolated islands in view. After an unforgettable day at Chidiyatapu, return to your hotel for a comfortable overnight stay in Port Blair.
