Flag Point: Flag Point in Port Blair holds great historical significance as it is the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian Tricolour on Indian soil for the first time on 30th December 1943. This event took place during the occupation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the Japanese imperial forces in World War II. Netaji was accompanied by officials of Azad Hind Fauj and the provisional government of Azad Hind during the hoisting of the flag. The Japanese had declared that the islands would be transferred to the provisional Government, Azad Hind, and Netaji, as the Supreme Commander of Azad Hind Fauj and head of the state of the provisional government, took the opportunity to assert India’s independence. Today, a 150-feet high flag mast stands at the same spot where Netaji unfurled the Tricolor, and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 75th anniversary of this historic event.

Frequently
Asked Questions

To reach the Andaman Islands, you typically have two primary modes of transportation:

By Air: The fastest way to reach the Andaman Islands is by taking a flight. You can fly from major Indian cities such as Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore to the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

By Sea: There are also passenger ships that operate between the mainland (usually from Kolkata, Chennai, and Vishakhapatnam) and the Andaman Islands. The journey by sea takes longer, but it provides a unique experience.

Ensure you check the availability and schedule of flights or ships, as they can be subject to changes due to weather conditions or other factors. Additionally, consider booking your transportation in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.

The best time to visit the Andaman Islands is during the months of October to May. This period encompasses both the post-monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons, offering pleasant weather and ideal conditions for various activities. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:

Post-Monsoon (October to March):

This is considered the primary tourist season. The weather is pleasant with calm seas, making it suitable for water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and boat rides.

The temperature ranges from 23°C to 31°C (73°F to 88°F).

Pre-Monsoon (April to May):

The weather remains warm, and this period is good for beach activities and water sports.

Temperatures can go up to 37°C (99°F), so it’s advisable to stay hydrated and use sun protection.

It’s worth noting that the Andaman Islands experience a monsoon season from June to September, characterized by heavy rainfall and rough seas. Many water activities may be restricted or unavailable during this time. If you plan to visit during the monsoon, be prepared for rain and check local weather updates.

Ultimately, the choice of when to visit depends on your preferences and the activities you want to engage in. Always check for the latest weather updates and plan accordingly.

Yes, Andaman is generally safe for a family holiday. Follow standard safety precautions, be mindful of weather conditions, practice water safety, and choose reputable accommodations and transportation. Stay informed about local customs and laws, and keep emergency contacts handy for a worry-free trip.

The months of May to September are generally considered the cheapest for a family trip to the Andaman Islands. This period coincides with the monsoon season, and while the weather may be less predictable with occasional heavy rainfall, some families opt for this time to take advantage of lower travel and accommodation costs. It’s essential to be aware that certain water activities may be limited during the monsoon season, so if you prioritize water sports, you may want to consider the trade-off between cost savings and activity availability. Always check weather forecasts and travel advisories before planning your trip.

If you’re planning a trip to Andaman between October and March, optimizing savings involves strategic booking:

Flight Reservations: Secure your flights at least six months in advance, especially for visits from October to February. This early planning ensures better prices, as last-minute bookings tend to be notably pricier during the peak tourist season.

Booking Hotels & Ferries: Aim to reserve hotels and ferry services at least three months ahead. While fixed rates apply year-round, the heightened demand during the tourist season emphasizes the necessity of early reservations. This proactive approach not only guarantees peace of mind but also elevates the overall quality of your Andaman travel experience, allowing you to select preferred accommodations and avoiding last-minute compromises due to limited availability.
