Cellular Jail:  The Cellular Jail, also known as Kaala Paani, is a historic monument located in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was built by the British in 1906 and used as a colonial prison for Indian freedom fighters during the struggle for independence. The jail was designed to keep prisoners isolated and cut off from the outside world. The three-story structure has seven wings, each with three stories, and was designed to hold up to 693 prisoners. The prisoners were kept in solitary confinement in small, windowless cells, which were known as “cells” or “cages.” The conditions inside the jail were extremely harsh, and prisoners were subjected to inhumane treatment and torture. The Cellular Jail is now a national memorial and serves as a reminder of India’s struggle for freedom.

Flag Point: Flag Point in Port Blair holds great historical significance as it is the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian Tricolour on Indian soil for the first time on 30th December 1943. This event took place during the occupation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the Japanese imperial forces in World War II. Netaji was accompanied by officials of Azad Hind Fauj and the provisional government of Azad Hind during the hoisting of the flag. The Japanese had declared that the islands would be transferred to the provisional Government, Azad Hind, and Netaji, as the Supreme Commander of Azad Hind Fauj and head of the state of the provisional government, took the opportunity to assert India’s independence. Today, a 150-feet high flag mast stands at the same spot where Netaji unfurled the Tricolor, and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 75th anniversary of this historic event.
